A way of engaging learners is to make learning meaningful to their lives.
ENGAGING YOUR STUDENTS
Seinfeld did a poor job of engaging his students with the topic of study. The reactions of the students showed that they had no idea of the topic studied. The students kept guessing or steering the conversation to their present situation.
A good teacher would teach the content by making it real and connect it to the students’ lives. The teacher wouldn’t just teach through dialogue but also through visual and kinesthetic means.
Critical thinking involves open-ended questioning. This allows for more varied answers where no answer would be completely wrong. With this type of environment the students would feel safe to share.
Seinfeld’s questions were also convergent and answer oriented rather than divergent and process-oriented. The questions only required one specific answer. Many of his questions were fact focussed. Critical thinking is process-oriented and involves many different ways of looking at the question or problem. http://cooperativelearning.nuvvo.com/lesson/9592-seinfeld-teaches-history

"How, then, would we define engagement? Perhaps the best definition comes from
the work of Phil Schlecty (1994), who says students who are engaged exhibit
three characteristics: (1) they are attracted to their work, (2) they persist in
their work despite challenges and obstacles, and (3) they take visible delight
in accomplishing their work." Strong, Silver and Robinson (1995).
